This Small Change Reduces the Risk of Spreading Covid-19 Within Your Car

Joseph Allen, assistant professor and director of the Healthy Buildings program at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, and Jack Spengler, a professor at the Chan School and director of the JPB Environmental Health Fellows Program - recently wrote an article for USA Today in which they looked at how Covid-19 spreads within a vehicle.

The two professors noted that due to the air-tight design of today's modern cars, the concentration of particles inside a car from a person with Covid-19 who coughs every few minutes can build up as the particles have no where to go.

They presented a model showing the levels of virus concentration in the air inside a car after 72 minutes. There was a significant difference in concentrations by making one small change: opening the windows.

"...even cracking one window open just 3 inches can keep this at bay. So the next time you're in the car - be it your own vehicle with others or in a taxi, Uber or Lyft - it's all the same advice: Open up the windows just a bit, even if everyone is feeling fine."

They also recommend not keeping the air on recirculation mode.
